Public Services

These courses are designed to introduce students to the work of the Public Services, as well as helping to develop skills relevant to gaining employment in the Armed Forces, Emergency Services (Police, Ambulance or Fire Service) or Prison Service.
You will learn about how issues including law, diversity, crime, cultural awareness and international affairs affect the Public Services. Many of the Units you will cover have a very practical nature, e.g. outdoor activities, expeditions and fitness.
The course is taught through a variety of activities such as role play, problem solving, discussions, practical work, and written assignments. This is supplemented with visits from the
Police, Fire and Military and through visiting speakers.
You will also learn about the roles, responsibilities, teamwork, leadership and career opportunities in the various Public Services. The essential qualities of physical fitness, determination, leadership and teamwork are tested to the full.
You will take part in many challenging outdoor activities that may include rock climbing, canoeing, caving and orienteering. A one week residential is an essential part of the first year of the Level 3 BTEC course.

Why this course?
Ever since I was very young, I’ve wanted to be a Police Officer. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy sixth form which put me off education for a while but last year I decided to go to college to make my dream a reality. I was attracted to all the different activities you explore on this course and I wanted a piece of the action. Some of them were quite daunting such as jumping into a freezing cold lake but you soon realise you are capable of a lot more than you originally think and your confidence grows. I love the freedom of the college as well as the brilliant teachers who have supported me throughout my time here and even through my application to the Police Service.
What next?
My application to the Thames Valley Police Service was successful and I hope to be starting very soon. I will continue studying at the college to gain a Public Services BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma.
