Reading College Apprentices get hands on back at School

A team of enthusiastic apprentice bricklayers and apprentice carpenters from Reading College were out in force at Micklands School in Caversham this week to carry out some maintenance work on the school grounds. Their useful contribution to the school is just one aspect of the Reading College community engagement scheme which lets students get involved with community projects for the benefit of local people.
The apprentices, all of whom work for local employers, were very pleased to be back at school, especially now they can show off their construction skills and give something back to education. The apprentices spent the day replacing fencing and doing odd jobs about the site, happily honing their skills whilst working on a worthwhile project.
Carpentry apprentice Tom Sivyer 18 from Reading who works for AJC Carpentry Ltd said, “It’s a great way to get out and about and try new things and its ace that we can help the school out at the same time.”
The team of apprentices are returning in March to carry out further work at the school. If you know of any other community projects that Reading College students could get involved in please contact Miriam Braham, Miriam.braham@reading-college.ac.uk
An Apprenticeship is a work based training programme for people of any age and combines learning on the job with gaining nationally recognised qualifications. For information on Apprenticeships visit the Reading College Open Evening, 8 February 2012, 6-8.30pm, where local employers and Apprenticeship tutors will be on hand with information about routes into Apprenticeships.
