Four hair and media make up students headed to Derbyshire to enter intermediate and advanced WorldSkills UK heats.
WorldSkills UK provides an opportunity for young people studying on vocational courses to showcase their skills and be in with a chance to represent their college and country at an international level (international World Skills competition happens every two years).
Our hair and media make up course is designed to give students the skills and knowledge to be able to work in industries such as theatre, TV and film.
Students had to complete a look on their model - advanced student needed to create a musical theatre piece and intermediate Hollywood glamour. Entries from our advanced students included Moulin Rouge and Lion King. Students had to make any props or accessories themselves.
We're very pleased to announce that Olivia Alford won the intermediate category with her Sophia Loren look!
On finding out she’d won, Olivia said “I didn’t expect at all to win and was really pleased when I found out. We’ve been preparing for about six weeks; I looked at a range of ideas and created mood boards before the competition as didn’t want to use the first idea I had.”
“The competition was daunting and exciting. It was quite nerve-wracking when the judges came over to watch us put together our looks.”
In creating her Hollywood glamour look, Olivia showcased a number of skills, including airbrushing foundation and blusher, applying eyelashes and pinned curls.
Students were judged on their application technique, dramatic impact, their own personal appearance and finished results.
Olivia now has a nervous wait until the other heats have taken place, as the students with the highest scores across all heats will be invited to the national final in November where the theme will be glam rock.
In other WorldSkills news, we will be hosting the engineering industrial electronics heat on 20 June. Watch this space for more information!
