Thinking about a change of career?

Are you aged 19 or over and wanting to study A-levels, an Access to Higher Education Diploma course or a Level 3 programme?
The government has introduced the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan to help you access funds to pay for your learning.

Is the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan for me?

The 19+ Advanced Learner Loan is easy to apply for and is not dependent on your household income. To be eligible to apply for it, you need to:
  • Be aged 19 or over at the start of your course
  • Start your course on or after 1 August 2016
  • Have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before the start of your course
  • Study an eligible course at Level 3 and above at an approved college or training provider in England. Approved courses include: A-levels, Access to HE diplomas, other diplomas and certificates.

Repaying the loan

You won't start paying your 19+ Advanced Learner Loan until you earn over £21,000 a year.
Repayments are calculated on the basis of how much you earn. You pay 9% of the money you earn over £21,000, before tax. This means someone earning £22,000 a year would be repaying £7 a month. Someone earning £35,000 a year would repay £105 a month.  Your loan is subject to interest, charged on a sliding scale depending on how much you earn.
Here are other important things to consider:
  • If you are aged 19-23 and this is your first full Level 3 course, you will not have to pay for the cost of your course.
  • If you complete an eligible Access to higher education course followed by a higher education course, you will no longer need to repay the original 19+ Advanced Learner loan you took for the Access to HE course.

Applying for the 19+ Advanced Learner Loan

What our adult students are saying

'I enjoy the more adult experience of the Access classes. You can really talk to our teachers and they are very supportive. The way we are encouraged to learn is great preparation for university with lots of independent study. My research skills have really improved.'

Ellie, Access to HE

'The course has been great... It has opened my eyes to new possibilities and given me the confidence to pursue them. I have a clear vision now of what I’d like to do and how I’m going to get there. I’ve been accepted on to the BA (Hons) in Textile and Surface Pattern Design at Bucks New University. When I graduate, I would like to work as a print designer, designing and constructing my own garments under my own fashion label.’

Janice, Foundation Degree in Creative Arts and Design Practice

'I chose to study AAT Accounting because I needed a solid foot hold in gaining a career. I enjoyed my course, especially learning new concepts which I otherwise would never have known. I am eager to put the skills and knowledge I have developed to good use.'

Charles, Accountancy

'I'm finding out new stuff that I hadn't really thought about until I got here. I've drawn so much energy from the other students on the course that I find myself getting more and more ideas by the day. My future plans, despite being 72 and disabled, include getting back to work.  I've always loved what I do, and to do what I love and get paid for it is just the icing on the cake!'
