IGCSE English (Evening)

We are proud to offer this stand-alone qualification for IGCSE English Language. You will be assessed in three key areas: Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening.

You will also gain the ability to construct and convey meaning in written Standard English. You will be tested through a combination of Controlled Assessments and External Exams. We currently offer this qualification through the University of Cambridge International Examinations exam board.

What do I learn?
You will learn about modern drama, specifically the work of Willy Russell, through an analysis of two key characters from the play Blood Brothers. You will further develop your reading skills by carefully selecting key quotations as well as developing your language analysis.

There will also be an opportunity to study how people converse in modern day as well as plan and deliver a presentation, a role play piece and a formal discussion. In addition, you will be assessed on your creative writing skills through two key areas.

Your IGCSE English course is delivered using the following Assessment Framework:

Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers (Controlled Assessment for Reading): 15%
Spoken Language Study (Controlled Assessment for Reading): 10%
Descriptive Writing Controlled Assessment: 7.5%
Narrative Writing Controlled Assessment: 7.5%
3 x Speaking & Listening Assessments: 20%
2 x External Examinations (Reading and Writing): 40%

You will learn though both traditional and e-learning. You will need to be prepared for extra study and spend around three hours per week on studying away from the classroom. Resources will be provided (both paper-based and e-based). In some cases, Google Chromebooks will be provided in class where you can utilise live writing tools such as Google Docs and Google Communities.
What do I gain?
Your IGCSE can be a stand-alone qualification and lead on to further study. You will have your own specialist personal tutor who you will meet individually or as part of a group tutorial and they will help you set, review and achieve your targets. There is an extensive programme of support to help you make your next decision regarding study or work.

The college provides a varied programme of enrichment opportunities and you will be encouraged to select from a range including: volunteering, work experience, sport and performing.
What do I need?
You normally have four GCSEs at grade D including English Language. A Functional Skills English qualification (at Level 2) will also strengthen your application.
What can I do next?
Gaining an A* to C grade can help you to progress on to a suitable Level 3 course such as A-levels or finding a job.
What else do I need to know?
Apply online and you will then be invited to an interview. Before coming to interview, you will be required to complete an online diagnostic assessment at home so that we can make sure that IGCSE is the right level course for you.
