| 01/02/2005 | BLAST1386 figures in UK radio poll! | ||||||
| Blast 1386, the student radio station for Reading College and School of Arts & Design, part of Thames Valley University, has been listed 16th out of 44 in a poll of ‘Favourite UK domestic stations’. The vote took place in the January edition of ‘Communication’ the British DX Club (BDXC) magazine and included much larger British radio stations. The BDXC is a club for radio enthusiasts, it specialises in coverage of all aspects of radio broadcasting - from searching out distant or difficult-to-hear radio stations to listening to the major international broadcasters - on the short wave, medium wave and VHF/FM bands. The club also has in-depth coverage of UK domestic radio developments as well as reports on new ways of listening to the radio including WorldSpace and the World Wide Web. The result of the poll surprised even station manager Bob Goertz who said: "We have more and more fans of Blast1386. The wide range of programmes, free-form style and the great sound have marked us out as a firm favourite.” “Blast1386.com is listed on so many lists of UK online radio stations that we see a considerable amount of online listening. These are people who log in on both a casual and regular basis and are from the local area and abroad. The move to a faster broadband stream hasn't dented those figures one bit.” Members of the BDXC placed BBC national radio and Classic FM first, but ranking Blast1386 at no 16 put them ahead of many local stations and digital radio channels. The station is suspending normal presenter schedules today January 17th for the UK Radio Aid appeal, which it is hoped will raise more than £1 million for the disaster-hit region. Blast 1386 is joining up with stations such as 2-Ten fm, Kick fm, Classic Gold, and Kestrel for the first fundraising event of its kind in commercial radio’s 31-year history. Former Radio One breakfast show host Chris Evans will return to radio for the first time in three years with a special broadcast and will interview Prime Minister Tony Blair. His broadcast will also be heard on Virgin Radio, which famously sacked him from the breakfast job. Other celebrity presenters taking part include Big Brother hosts Davina McCall and Dermot O’Leary and Capital Radio DJ Johnny Vaughan. Radio Aid, which can be heard from 6am to 6pm, will reach an estimated 30 million listeners who will all be asked to donate at least an hour of their salary to the appeal. In addition, each of the 200 stations taking part will donate one day’s profit to the fund.
